The operation of Smart XTｪ is fairly transparent to the user. When it recognizes a DCS (Desktop Color Separation ) file during printing to a high resolution output device, it will create and dowload a high resolution file of the image. When it recognizes a PSImage file during printing or separation output to a high resolution output device, it will create (depending on the nature of the high-resolution file) and download (Automatic Picture Replacement) a high resolution file of the image. Smart XT fully supports clipping paths.

Bug Fixes Version 2.5.4
1. Smart XT -35 error dialog that warned you if you had missing files will not appear when you print a page with missing images.
2. QuarkXPress files where the images are OK to print but their paths are not same as when the file was created will now print with Smart XT without errors.

4. We fixed a bug where Smart XT sometimes crashed if you tried to print an unsaved document. Now, Smart XT presents a warning dialog (see below).

If you select Cancel, the print operation will stopped so you can save the page. If you select Disable Smart XT, QuarkXPress will continue to print.This means that the low res will print if your page uses DCS or PSImage files.
2. Smart XT will process images for only the pages being printed. It will now process the images for each page at the start of each page. Previously, Smart XT began processing all images for the entire document as soon as the first page was printed. This will save on disk space at print time.
3. Documents that contain sections will process properly now.
Rules of Use
1. This version of Smart XT will only work with QuarkXPress version 3.32 and greater.
2. You must have sufficient disk space available. Smart XT builds temporary files for all DCS and APR high resolution files on the same drive as the active System Folder. You must have enough disk space for all of the temporary files. The temp files are deleted after the page has been printed or separated.
The ﾒrule of thumbﾓ to calculate required free disk space is: on the startup disk, have available AT LEAST 2 times the total of all image data for the page or pages you are printing. Smart XT copies all DCS files to the Temporary Items folder as EPS files (2x disk space needed). If you use LaserWriter 8, you will need at least 3x the total disk space.
3. APR will work if the high resolution file to be substituted is in the SAME FOLDER as the low resolution PSImage file, or if the hi-resolution file is NOT IN THE SAME FOLDER, Smart XT will allow you to find it and will then do the substitution.
6. Smart XT is for use with DCS files saved with Binary or ASCII encoding. DCS or EPS JPEG files are not currently compatible with Smart XT. Also, some DCS files created by Color Access, may not work with Smart XT.
Recommendations to enhance Smart XTﾕs processing
To speed up processing time and reduce network traffic, we recommend that you keep all high resolution images (as well as DCS and APR main images) and the Quark XPress documents be resident on, and accessible by a local SCSI device (optimally, a hard drive).
Increase the RAM allocation to QuarkXPress by using the Finder to get info on the QuarkXPress application Icon. Increasing RAM to at least twice the applications requirement will improve Smart XTﾕs performance noticeably.
Questions and answers with Smart XT version 2.5
Q. I frequently receive error messages when I use Smart XT to print to a Tektronix Phaser 480* printer. Here is what happens: Smart XT processes all of DCS files on the page. However, when the file starts to print, an error occurs: ﾒOffending command: time outﾓ appears together with an additional message ﾒunknown error (-8132)ﾓ.
A. The error -8132 means a timeout error has occured. This error will only occur with LaserWriter(LW) 7 type printer drivers. To avoid this error:
1. Use a LaserWriter 8 printer driver. Using LW8 will completely eliminate timeout errors from occuring with the Phaser 480. However printing with LW8 requires double the amount of disk space than you would normally use because the printer driver creates a spool file.
2. Log into the Tektronixs BBS. On the BBS are some small apps and a LW7 printer driver "Phaser 480 DCS" that extend the Phaser 480ﾕs wait timeout.
*The timeout problem will occur on other printers that have a limited wait timeout.We have tested the Smart XT XTension with the various LaserWriter drivers and recommend that, if possible, use version 7.1.2. If timeout errors become a problem, please switch to LaserWriter 8.1.1.
Q. When I try to print a page with Smart XT installed, I notice QuarkXPress starts to print but the clock keeps spinning and nothing seems to happen. The Smart XT dialog never appears either. What is happening?
A. If the page that you are printing uses any images saved as: Adobe Photoshop EPS with JPEG encoding and or Adobe Photoshop EPS/DCS with JPEG encoding, this will occur.
